Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has reported that Bangladesh now ranks 14th among the most corrupt countries out of 180, recording its lowest Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score in 13 years.

The findings were shared on Tuesday at a press conference at TIB’s Dhanmondi office in Dhaka. TIB’s Executive Director, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, stated that Bangladesh’s CPI score for 2024 has dropped to 23, a significant decline from previous years. The country now shares this score with Congo and Iran, which are ranked 151st globally.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman highlighted that despite the government's strong statements against corruption, its actions have instead shielded corrupt individuals, leading to systemic corruption and large-scale misappropriation. He attributed the decline to the weakening of institutions and the ineffective enforcement of anti-corruption laws.

Bangladesh’s score has dropped from 25 last year to 23 in 2024. Since 2012, the country's CPI scores have ranged between 25 and 28, but this recent fall marks a worsening trend. In South Asia, Bangladesh now holds the second-lowest score, with only Afghanistan ranking lower at 17 points. With this ranking, Bangladesh remains among the world’s most corrupt nations, with only a few countries scoring worse.
