Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has stated that Bangladesh must decide what kind of relationship it wants with India, emphasizing the deep historical ties between the two nations dating back to 1971.

Speaking at the Delhi University Literature Festival on Sunday, Jaishankar expressed concern over anti-India rhetoric from certain members of Bangladesh's interim government. He criticized the contradictory stance of seeking good relations while simultaneously blaming India for various issues, some of which he deemed "ridiculous" based on reports.

He reiterated India's desire for stability and normal bilateral ties but noted that New Delhi is displeased with the persistent hostile messaging from across the border.

Jaishankar highlighted two key concerns for India. First, he mentioned the recurring attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, stating that such incidents influence India's stance and require a response, which India has already voiced. Second, he acknowledged Bangladesh’s internal political dynamics but stressed that, as neighbors, Dhaka must determine the nature of its relationship with New Delhi.

He reiterated that while Bangladesh expresses a desire for normal ties, it cannot continue blaming India for domestic issues. He further noted that India does not appreciate continuous negative signaling from Bangladesh.
