Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday criticized Bangladesh for its widespread document forgery, calling the country a “world champion in fraud” and highlighting how this has harmed its international credibility.

“Everything is fake—passports, visas, even educational certificates. Many countries now refuse our passports,” Yunus said while inaugurating the four-day Digital Device and Innovation Expo 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.

He noted that visa rejections abroad are often due to forged documents, including fake academic certificates. “I’ve seen cases where someone applied as a doctor with entirely falsified credentials,” he said, adding that such practices have even led some countries to deny entry to Bangladeshi citizens, including seafarers.

“Fraud is carried out with intelligence and creativity, but for the wrong purposes,” Yunus warned. “If we want technological progress, we must uphold fairness and integrity. We don’t want to become a factory of fraud; we want to stand proud on the global stage based on merit.”

Highlighting the role of youth, he praised the 2024 mass uprising, calling it a turning point for Bangladesh. “The youth will lead the new Bangladesh and even the world. They are the most powerful generation in history,” he said, emphasizing technology as their core strength.

Reflecting on a past internet shutdown, Yunus said it sparked significant public outrage and mobilized protests, showing the critical importance of connectivity for young people. “Even a powerful government had to retreat because of that,” he added.
