Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the upcoming T20 World Cup after the ICC rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request to relocate its matches from India.

The decision came after the Bangladesh government refused to allow the national team to tour India, citing “serious and credible” security concerns that it said were not adequately addressed by the ICC. Despite a final appeal by the BCB to the ICC’s Independent Dispute Resolution Committee, the global body moved ahead with its earlier ultimatum and confirmed the replacement.

As the highest-ranked qualifying team, Scotland will now take Bangladesh’s place in the group stage.

Dhaka said its decision was driven by what it described as a hostile environment in India. The government pointed to the recent removal of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL by the BCCI over security threats as evidence that player safety could not be guaranteed.

Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul also cited reports of mob lynchings of suspected Bangladeshis in West Bengal and threats from political groups such as Shiv Sena. “We cannot risk our players’ lives,” the Sports Adviser said, stressing that national dignity and safety come before sport.

Although critics argued the choice should have been left to the players, the government maintained that ensuring security is a state responsibility. Bangladesh now faces possible sanctions and financial losses, but insists the safety of its citizens is non-negotiable.
