The freshwater crocodile rescued from the pond of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali’s shrine in Bagerhat has refused food for 19 days since being moved to the Khulna Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on June 3. The female crocodile, estimated to be around 45 years old, has not eaten fish, meat, or even live ducks offered by caretakers.

Forest officials say there is no immediate health risk because the animal has significant fat reserves and can survive for weeks without food due to its slow metabolism. However, wildlife experts believe the crocodile is experiencing psychological stress from captivity and is struggling to adapt to its new environment.

The crocodile was rescued after a tragic incident on June 1, when a seven-year-old child died after being dragged into the shrine pond. Since then, it has been under close observation at the rehabilitation center.

Officials have ruled out releasing the crocodile into the Sundarbans, as it is a freshwater species and cannot survive in the region’s brackish waters. Its future now depends on safety measures at the shrine and decisions by the Forest Department.
