On Saturday (December 6), marking the 33rd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, expelled Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a mosque of the same name in Beldanga, Murshidabad, West Bengal. From the stage, he revealed that an anonymous donor would contribute 80 crore taka for the project.

According to TV9, the political debate over the mosque’s construction had reached the Calcutta High Court. After receiving court approval, the foundation stone was laid at a grand ceremony under tight security.

Humayun Kabir said the mosque would cost around 300 crore taka and would be funded entirely by minority Muslim donations. He emphasized that no government funds would be used, as it would compromise the mosque’s sanctity. He added, “One person, who wishes to remain anonymous, will donate 80 crore taka to my organization within a month. There will be no shortage of funds.”

Currently owning 25 bighas of land, Humayun plans to build not only the mosque but also an Islamic hospital, university, helipad, and passenger lounge on the site.

Humayun has been expelled from the Trinamool Congress indefinitely for announcing the project and stepping beyond party lines. Analysts say his move has put the party in a tough position ahead of the elections. While opposition parties accuse him of playing the minority card, Trinamool claims he is attempting to gain political advantage by spreading false information about minority candidates.
