Iran’s Assembly of Experts has elected Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ali Khamenei, as the next Supreme Leader, according to informed sources cited by Iran International. The decision reportedly came amid significant pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Sources also told Iran International that former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad survived an alleged assassination attempt on Tuesday. He was unharmed and has since been relocated to a secure location. During Israel’s recent attacks, Iranian media published conflicting reports regarding Ahmadinejad’s fate, with some outlets claiming he had been killed while others said they could not verify the information.

Meanwhile, the IRGC is said to be pushing for the swift appointment of a new leader following Khamenei’s death. Sources familiar with the matter said the remaining IRGC command structure aims to finalize the decision within hours, specifically by dawn on Sunday, March 1.

With ongoing airstrikes, convening a formal session of the Assembly of Experts — the constitutional body responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader — is reportedly not feasible. As a result, the IRGC is allegedly seeking to expedite the appointment outside standard legal procedures.

Reports further indicate growing disorder within Iran’s security and military institutions following Khamenei’s reported killing in joint US-Israeli strikes. Parts of the command chain have allegedly been disrupted, complicating operational coordination and crisis management.

Sources also claim that some military commanders and personnel have avoided reporting to their bases due to fears of continued US and Israeli attacks targeting command and support facilities.

Additionally, the IRGC is reportedly concerned that public unrest could escalate once daylight breaks on Sunday, with fears that protests may erupt across various parts of the country.
