Australia has named Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as its first female Chief of Army, creating a historic moment in the nation’s 125-year military history. Currently leading joint capabilities, she will assume the position in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart as part of a wider leadership reshuffle across the defence forces.
Her appointment comes as Australia works to boost female participation in the military, where women make up around 21% of personnel, and address ongoing concerns about harassment and discrimination. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Defence Minister Richard Marles described the move as a major step toward greater inclusion and a source of inspiration for future generations.
