A lawsuit filed in Gurudaspur upazila of Natore has sparked controversy after a 7-year-old child was shown as 21 years old and named as an accused in an attempted murder case. Following the incident, the judge immediately issued a show-cause notice to the complainant, Shahanuar Rahman.

On Sunday (April 26), the child appeared in court with his father for a bail hearing. The judge of the Women and Children’s Court, Md. Rafiqul Islam, granted bail.

The victim child lives in Dharabarisha Union of Gurudaspur upazila and is currently a first-grade student at a local primary school.

According to defense lawyer Md. Shamim Hossain, on April 9, an altercation took place involving Shraban Sarkar, a ninth-grade student of Dharabarisha Model High School. Following the incident, on April 10, Shraban’s father, Shahanuar Rahman, filed an attempted murder case at Gurudaspur Police Station against five individuals. In the case, the 7-year-old child was listed as the third accused, falsely showing his age as 21.

It has been confirmed that the child was born on September 24, 2018, making him only seven years old. Once this discrepancy became public, it triggered widespread criticism in the area, with many questioning how such a young child could be implicated in a violent case.

The complainant, Shahanuar Rahman, said by phone that they had “estimated the age as 21 years,” adding that “he must be at least 15 years old.” He further claimed his son was beaten and named those he was told were involved. However, after being informed of the child’s official birth certificate showing his age as 7, he declined to comment further.

Gurudaspur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manjurul Alam said the case was filed over a clash that occurred on April 9 at a school ground. He added that he was not aware a 7-year-old child had been named in the case and that the confusion arose due to the complainant listing the age as 21. The matter will be investigated.

Natore District Bar Association General Secretary Advocate Shariful Haque Mukta said it is highly unusual for such a young child to be named in a criminal case and stressed the importance of proper verification to avoid such incidents in the future.
