At least 15 people were killed and several others injured after lightning strikes hit eight districts across the country from Sunday morning to afternoon (April 26). The fatalities were reported in Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Thakurgaon, Bogra, Natore, Panchagarh, and Sherpur. The severe weather also led to the deaths of livestock, including a horse and a cow.

Gaibandha recorded the highest number of casualties with five deaths across Sundarganj, Saghata, and Fulchhari upazilas. In Sundarganj, three youths—Fuad (14), Rafi (12), and Mizanur (20)—were killed instantly in South Dhopadanga village while standing together. Rafi was a primary school student. In Fulchhari, 22-year-old Manik Hossein died while operating a horse-drawn cart, and his horse also died in the strike. In Saghata, 65-year-old Nambar Ali lost his life while checking on his goats near his home.

Elsewhere, Sirajganj reported two deaths—farmers Abdul Hamid (50) and Hasan Sheikh (25)—while working in paddy fields in Tarash and Raiganj upazilas. In Jamalpur, 55-year-old Hasmat Ali died while grazing cattle, and 22-year-old Morjina Akhter was killed while cooking in her courtyard in Melandah. In Thakurgaon, two people—Laboni Akhter (35) and Elias Ali (37)—died in separate incidents in Pirganj upazila. One death each was also reported in Bogra, Natore, Sherpur, and Panchagarh, with victims including agricultural workers and a teacher affiliated with the Islamic Foundation.

The storm also affected the capital, where two East West University students, Sufia Akhter (22) and Farah Akhter (22), were injured by a lightning strike near the Oparajeyo Bangla sculpture at Dhaka University. They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an unconscious state for treatment. Authorities and local officials confirmed the identities of the deceased, noting that most victims were engaged in outdoor or farming activities when the sudden storms struck.
