Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul has said that the amount of reform carried out during the tenure of the current interim government is unprecedented in Bangladesh’s history within such a short period. “I say this humbly, but I will also say it very strongly,” he remarked.

He made the comments on Sunday while speaking at a policy dialogue titled “Judicial Independence and the Rule of Law” at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital. The event was organized by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS) and attended by politicians, lawyers, human rights activists, and representatives of civil society.

Asif Nazrul noted that questioning what reforms have taken place has become a common trend, which he said is healthy. However, he pointed out three negative realities behind such questions. Some people, he said, claim no reforms have been implemented. Rejecting this, he highlighted reforms in the financial and banking sectors, saying public confidence in banks has returned, remittance inflows are at record levels, and prices of essentials have remained stable—outcomes that would not have been possible without reforms.

He added that while more could have been done given more time, significant reforms have indeed taken place. He criticized attempts to belittle these changes, citing the Police Commission Ordinance as an example, acknowledging his own frustrations with it but stressing that it should not be dismissed as insignificant.

Responding to claims that the government did not consult stakeholders, Asif Nazrul called such assertions “ridiculous,” stating that the level of consultation conducted by the commissions exceeded even that undertaken during the drafting of the 1972 Constitution. Addressing civil society representatives, he said that if they proposed ten recommendations, at least six had been incorporated.

He concluded by urging critics to “please speak the truth.”
