On December 10 last year, two student representatives in the Advisory Council, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya and Mahfuz Alam, submitted their resignations to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. The Chief Adviser’s press wing had stated that the resignations would be accepted once the election schedule was announced. The schedule for the 13th National Parliament election and the general vote was declared on December 11. On December 24, a notification confirmed the resignation of the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Khoda Baksh Chowdhury.

Despite resigning, Asif and Mahfuz have continued to stay in government housing for 50 days. Meanwhile, Asif Mahmud serves as chairman and spokesperson of the election management committee of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP).

Although both claim to have left the official residences, a visit on the night of January 28 revealed that Asif still uses “Niloy-6” on Hair Road. A resident official said, “Sir is still here; he hasn’t vacated.” Most of the time, the 27-year-old former adviser stays at his private residence in Paribag. Local law enforcement near Niloy-6 noted that he conducts official activities and meets people at the residence. Asif, however, told the media that he has been living at Paribag for almost a month and no longer stays at the government house.

Mahfuz Alam resides in the Hair Road duplex “Uttorayon-3.” He told journalists he will vacate the residence before the elections.

Md. Asaduzzaman, Director of the Government Housing Department, stated that there is no specific rule regarding how long former advisers can stay in official residences. For regular government employees, retired officers may remain for up to two months, extendable to six months if their children are studying. No timeline is defined for ministers or advisers.

Asaduzzaman added that he informed the Secretary about the situation and will follow ministerial instructions.

Asif Mahmud joined the interim government formed on August 8, 2024, after the fall of the Awami League government in the student-led uprising on August 5. He served in the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Mahfuz Alam was initially appointed Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on August 28, 2024, and was sworn in as an adviser on November 10. He was later assigned as Information Adviser after Nahid Islam’s resignation in February 2025.

Even after resigning, Asif and Mahfuz’s continued stay in government housing has raised questions of ethics and propriety. Former Secretary and ex-Rector of Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre, A.K.M. Abdul Awal Majumdar, cited historical precedent: when Kazi Zafar Ahmed resigned from Ziaur Rahman’s cabinet, he personally submitted his resignation, left the government house two days prior, and did not use official vehicles. He noted that politicians today should follow such examples to uphold ethical standards, implying that Asif and Mahfuz’s refusal to vacate sets a negative precedent.
