Mahdi Hasan, Secretary of the Habiganj district branch of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has been granted bail following his arrest over allegations of threatening and behaving arrogantly toward the officer-in-charge (OC) of Shayestaganj Police Station. The bail was approved 14 hours after his arrest, on Sunday morning.

The court’s General Register Officer, Tajul Islam, confirmed the bail.

Mahdi Hasan’s lawyer, M.A. Majid, stated that Hasan was produced before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-3 around 8:30 a.m., and after the hearing, Judge Abdul Mannan granted bail.

Inspector Aminul Islam of Habiganj Court Police said Hasan was brought to court in connection with a case filed at Shayestaganj Police Station, accusing him of obstructing government duties and misconduct toward police officers. Over 100 leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were present at the court premises during the hearing.

Following Hasan’s arrest on Saturday, a group of people staged a sit-in in front of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station from 7:30 p.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday, demanding his bail.

Earlier, on Thursday night, Enamul Hasan Noyon, vice president of Shayestaganj Sadar Union Chhatra League, was arrested by police for alleged involvement with the banned Chhatra League organization.

Police sources reported that Anti-Discrimination Student Movement activists, led by Hasan, had blocked the police station on Friday at noon demanding Noyon’s release.

During the incident, Hasan was reportedly heard telling the OC:

"We, the July Movement activists, put the government in power. You, as an administrative officer, have arrested our boy. Habiganj witnessed the most significant movement; 10 people were killed here. We burned Baniachong Police Station. We set SI Santosha on fire. Do you think our men just disappeared like that?"

At 2:30 p.m., Additional Superintendent of Police Shahidul Islam arrived at the site, and Noyon was released around 3 p.m.

A video of the incident circulated on social media, sparking nationwide discussion.

Later, Hasan told local journalists that Noyon’s arrest was politically motivated, but he admitted his statement about burning the police station was incorrect, claiming it was said in the heat of the moment.

Due to his behavior toward the OC, Hasan has received a show-cause notice from the central committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The notice stated that his remarks contradict the organization’s values and harmed its reputation, instructing him to submit a written explanation within 24 hours and refrain from organizational activities until further notice.
