Workers will receive their due payments in phases starting 9 March, with funds provided by the ministries of finance and labor. The labor ministry will handle the distribution of payments, as stated in a Beximco notice. This decision came after a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on the labor and business situation at Beximco Industrial Park, chaired by Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain. When asked about the decision, Hossain declined to comment, indicating it would be shared at a press conference on Thursday. According to an anonymous Beximco official, the Managing Director, Osman Kaiser Chowdhury, attended the meeting where the factory closure notice was signed. The notice revealed that 14 establishments, including Beximco Limited (excluding Yarn Unit-1), had laid off all workers under the Labour Act, citing a lack of work. These layoffs took effect from 16 December and 5 February, with full factory shutdowns by 28 February. Beximco Textiles requires Tk550-600 crore to pay workers' dues, but a request for Tk400 crore in aid was not responded to by the government or Janata Bank. Since the fall of the Hasina-led government in August 2024, Beximco Group's owner, Salman F Rahman, has been in jail, and the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit froze his and his family's bank accounts. In September, the CID filed cases against 28 Beximco individuals, accusing them of laundering Tk1,000 crore. Initially, the interim government planned to sell Beximco shares to pay the dues, but complications led to a decision to use government funds. Beximco Group faces a significant financial crisis, with 16 out of 31 companies under Beximco Industrial Park fully shut down, accumulating loans of Tk28,000 crore. Despite these challenges, Beximco has been a major exporter, with textile and apparel exports averaging $32 million monthly over the last six years.
