A private Indian university was removed from a major artificial intelligence summit in New Delhi on Wednesday after a staff member showcased a commercially available Chinese robotic dog, presenting it as the university’s own creation.

Government officials said Galgotias University was asked to dismantle its exhibit a day after communications professor Neha Singh told state-run DD News that the robotic dog, named Orion, was developed by the university’s Centre of Excellence.

Online users quickly identified the robot as the Unitree Go2, a widely used Chinese model sold by Unitree Robotics for around $1,600, commonly used in research and education.

Singh later told reporters she had not explicitly claimed the robot was the university’s invention, but was only displaying it as an exhibit.

Officials described the incident as embarrassing for India. In a statement on Tuesday, Galgotias University expressed that it was “deeply pained” and criticized what it called a “propaganda campaign” that could harm student morale.

On Wednesday, the university issued a new statement apologizing for the confusion, noting that Singh was not authorized to speak to the media and had been “ill-informed.” The statement added, “She was unaware of the technical origins of the product and, in her enthusiasm on camera, gave factually incorrect information.”

It is unclear if the university has fully removed its booth from the summit.

The episode highlights the challenges India faces as it seeks to position itself as a global hub for AI and advanced manufacturing, attracting billions in investment while emphasizing credibility and homegrown innovation.

The India AI Impact Summit began Monday amid organizational challenges, including long queues and reports of stolen exhibits, which were later recovered.

The event, billed as a flagship summit for the Global South, is attended by at least 20 heads of state, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to speak on Thursday. Other notable attendees include Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and AMI Labs Executive Chairman Yann LeCun.
