# After Beating Cancer in a Five-Year Fight, Nuha Secures 100th Place in DU’s B and C Units

On the day of the Dhaka University admission test results, like thousands of other students, Nusrat Jahan Nuha was anxiously waiting. But her story is unlike anyone else’s. Despite battling terminal cancer for five years, undergoing repeated chemotherapy sessions, surgeries, physical challenges, and facing an uncertain life, she achieved 100th place in both the ‘B’ and ‘C’ units of Dhaka University for the 2025–26 academic year.

Nuha was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a high-risk bone cancer, while studying in the eighth grade. Until then, she had lived a normal adolescence, but suddenly her life came to a halt. What followed was a long period of hospital visits, treatments, chemotherapy, and surgeries. At one point, it was difficult even to find a vein for her chemotherapy. She lost her hair, and the excruciating pain of a 14–15-year-old girl devastated the entire family.

Doctors even suggested amputating her leg. Eventually, the decision was made to remove her right tibia and replace it with a permanent prosthetic device. Her leg would never function normally again, and even a small accident could have left her confined to a wheelchair. Throughout this ordeal, Nuha’s elder sister, Moni, silently supported her, taking care of every need. Their father, a private-sector employee, tried to stay strong for his children despite the pain.

During Nuha’s battle with cancer, her mother was also diagnosed with the disease, and her maternal grandfather had previously passed away from cancer. Yet the family never broke down; perseverance became their only path. Despite long treatments, physical limitations, and interruptions in her studies, Nuha achieved GPA-5 in the SSC exams and later ranked 17th in the HSC exams with GPA-5 in all subjects.

Although she had the opportunity to enroll at Holy Cross College, the physical demands of classes on higher floors made it impossible. Nuha then joined Panchagarh Government Women’s College, where her determination grew even stronger. Dhaka University remained her dream. On the night before the ‘C’ unit exam, she was still in the hospital. Despite fever and weakness, she appeared for the ‘B’ unit exam and secured 100th place. She also achieved 32nd place at Jahangirnagar University and 47th at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

Speaking to Dhaka Post, Nuha said, “I feel Allah made many things easier for me. Chemotherapy was excruciating, especially the three days following each session. Yet somehow, I found strength. I cried very little because I didn’t want to show weakness in front of my family. Initially, I wanted to study medicine, but later realized it didn’t fit reality. I decided to study law at Dhaka University to fulfill my father’s wish.”

She added that her friends played a crucial role, and her family never added pressure. “In the last four months, I saw myself as an ordinary candidate. I believed I could do it. Alhamdulillah, there are no cancer cells in my body now,” she said.

Her elder brother, Khalid Mahmud Khan, said, “Nuha is not just my sister—she is everyone’s sister. She doesn’t seek sympathy, only love and prayers.”

At 14, while Nuha suffered unbearable pain from chemotherapy, vomiting repeatedly and physically exhausted, her classmates were attending school, learning, studying at home, and enjoying life. She, meanwhile, was only counting the hours, waiting for relief.

Khalid added, “I don’t know where our excuses come from. I say this not just as a brother—if your sister were Nuha, you would feel the same. Let’s stop making excuses and try harder. Let Nuha’s determination inspire us all. We can all succeed if we channel that willpower.”

By overcoming one of the most dangerous cancers, osteosarcoma, Nuha has not only regained her health but also secured a top place in the country’s most prestigious university admission exams. She is not just a story of success but a living example of willpower, patience, and faith.
