A visually impaired family in Brahmanbaria, who have relied on singing for their livelihood for more than 30 years, has recently been barred from performing. The family—13 members in total, including nine who are blind—sang popular folk songs at local events. After each performance, they would earn Tk 5,000 to Tk 8,000 from donations given by appreciative listeners.

However, a few days ago, their singing abruptly came to a stop. Hazi Mia, the head of the family, said they were suddenly instructed to stop mid-performance after being accused of eve-teasing. The allegation has devastated them. “We are blind, and singing is all we know,” Hazi Mia said. “We have no other way to earn.” He added that the family must now search for a new place to perform. Though not always regularly, they had been singing in that area for over 50 years without being asked to leave.

Hazi Mia, who has been singing since childhood, shared his fears: “We have three sons with their own families. Their children watch us lose hope. If this continues, it will be impossible for us to earn a living through singing again.”
