The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested Shah Alam, an assistant-cum-office assistant at the Banshkhali Upazila Family Planning Office in Chattogram, red-handed with bribe money after setting a trap.

The arrest was made on Wednesday (January 14) during a raid at the Banshkhali Upazila Family Planning Office, ACC Public Relations Officer Md Akhtarul Islam confirmed.

According to ACC sources, former office assistant and security guard A.N.M. Muddasherul Haque Masud filed a written complaint accusing Shah Alam of harassment and demanding bribes to release long-overdue allowances and pension-related government dues. Following the complaint and with approval from the ACC Commission, a team from the Chattogram Integrated District Office-2 conducted the operation. Shah Alam was caught while accepting Tk 20,000 in bribe money from the complainant.

Legal action has been taken against Shah Alam, and he has been sent to jail.

Earlier, on January 7, a similar ACC operation was conducted at the Jessore District Primary Education Office. On that day, District Primary Education Officer Md Ashraful Alam was caught red-handed while taking Tk 120,000 in bribes to approve pension files.

In that case, assistant teacher Md Nurunnabi of Basundia Khanpara Government Primary School said his wife, Shirina Akhtar, who was also an assistant teacher at Kauria Government Primary School in Jhikargacha, Jessore, died on August 23 last year. He alleged that Ashraful Alam demanded Tk 120,000 to approve her pension file and also sought bribes for processing another pension case. Nurunnabi then informed the ACC Jessore Integrated Office and arranged the money.

ACC Jessore Integrated District Office Assistant Director Md Al-Amin said that after receiving the complaint, the matter was reported to the ACC headquarters. With approval from the headquarters, an ACC team stationed itself at the District Primary Education Office on Wednesday afternoon and arrested the education officer red-handed with the bribe money after it was handed over.
