Manjibur Rahman Manju, chairman of Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), publicly apologized for the party’s decision to join the Jamaat-led 11-party political alliance, describing it as a failure. He admitted that as a new political party, AB Party has been unable to meet the expectations of the people, and that the decision to join the larger alliance has caused disappointment to many.

Manju made the apology on Tuesday (January 13) evening while speaking at an event titled “National Election 2026 and Citizen Expectations” organized by Citizens Platform in Agargaon, Dhaka.

He said that as a new party, AB Party could not fulfill the expectations of the public. Pressured by the realities of electoral politics, they felt compelled to join a larger political alliance. He acknowledged that this decision caused pain and disappointment among people, which is why he was seeking forgiveness from everyone present.

Addressing the audience directly, he asked if they could forgive him, to which a collective “No” was shouted in response. Reacting to this, Manju noted that while people should forgive those who apologize, society today seems to have developed a negative culture of withholding forgiveness, which he finds concerning.

Explaining the reasons behind joining the Jamaat-led alliance, the AB Party chairman highlighted the challenges small parties face in elections. Without alliances with bigger parties, survival becomes extremely difficult due to shortages in organization, manpower, and financial resources. Nevertheless, he said AB Party takes full responsibility for the decision, estimating that at least 60% of the accountability lies with them, and that they will not blame the general public for it.

When asked by Citizens Platform convener Debapriya Bhattacharya why AB Party failed to establish a new political alternative or a stronger platform, Manju responded that as a small party, they lacked the capacity. Managing election operations alone—from polling agents to overall logistics—was not feasible for them.

He expressed frustration over the constant online ridicule and insults directed at party leaders and workers, noting that people mockingly question whether the party could even secure 100 votes, and whether its members are even fit to participate in politics. These attacks have reportedly affected the morale of the party’s activists.

Manju also referred to Tasnim Zara, who left the National Citizens Party (NCP) to contest elections independently. He pointed out that such opportunities are rare, as Zara has a distinct social and professional background with strong media support. Even then, she could not secure a single percent of the vote. Those without such advantages cannot hope to contest elections alone, he said.

It is noted that AB Party informally joined the Jamaat-led alliance at the end of December. Prior to this, the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) had formally joined, bringing the total number of parties in the alliance to eleven.

For the upcoming national election, AB Party chairman Manju will contest from Feni-1 and has already started campaigning in the constituency.
