The Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association has reported that public transport owners are set to collect an additional Tk 832.30 crore as "Eid tips" from passengers during Eid-ul-Fitr. On average, each passenger will have to pay around Tk 200 extra for their journey.

According to the association's Secretary General, Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, approximately 22.74 crore trips will take place from Dhaka between 20th and 31st March, with around 1.5 crore people traveling to their hometowns for the holiday.

He also pointed out that the monitoring committees, which include transport owners but lack passenger representatives, have failed to stop fare exploitation. The report indicates that 98% of public transport services are overcharging passengers, even though drivers and staff already receive their salaries along with Eid bonuses.

The study further revealed that water transport will carry the highest number of travelers, with nearly 40 lakh passengers expected to depart from Sadarghat, Narayanganj river port, and other terminals. The excessive fares are reportedly driven by issues such as bribery, extortion, and other irregularities in the transport sector.

To address these problems, the association has suggested introducing digital fare collection and expanding CCTV surveillance to monitor and control unfair pricing.
