Palestine was the deadliest country for journalists in 2025, while the Middle East overall remained the most dangerous region for media professionals, according to a report by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The region accounted for 74 deaths last year, over half of the 128 journalists and media workers killed worldwide.

Following the Middle East, Africa recorded 18 deaths, Asia Pacific 15, the Americas 11, and Europe 10. Most victims were men, though 10 women were among those killed.

“128 journalists killed in a single year is not just a statistic; it is a global crisis,” said IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger. “These deaths are a brutal reminder that journalists are being targeted with impunity simply for doing their jobs.”

Palestinian journalists were the most affected, with 56 killed in 2025. Yemen followed with 13 deaths, Ukraine with eight, and Sudan with six. The report highlighted the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, who was shot on August 10 along with colleagues during an Israeli strike on a media tent outside Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital. Others killed in the attack included Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, Momen Aliwa, and Mohammed al-Khalidi.

The IFJ also cited an Israeli strike on a Yemeni newspaper office in early September as one of the deadliest attacks on media, killing 13 journalists and media workers at the Houthi-affiliated 26 September newspaper, along with more than 20 others.

Nine deaths were ruled accidents, while some, including journalists in Syria and Iran, were targeted because of their work.

While the Middle East remained the deadliest region for the third consecutive year, the Asia Pacific saw the highest number of journalists imprisoned, primarily in China and Hong Kong (143), followed by Myanmar (49) and Vietnam (37). Europe also saw a surge in journalist detentions, with 149 imprisoned, a 40% increase from 2024, attributed to intensified repression in Azerbaijan and Russia.
