The victims have been identified as Riaz Uddin, aged 50, his wife Rahima Begum, aged 40, and their two children—15-year-old daughter Samia Khatun and 13-year-old son Abbas Uddin. They were residents of the Bakhtiarghat area under Lakhanaband union in the upazila. According to local residents, the family had been living in a low-lying area near the base of a hillock for a long time. Due to the relentless rainfall over the past several days, a large portion of the hill suddenly collapsed onto their home around 2:45am, completely burying it under a mass of debris. Neighbors, awakened by the family's desperate screams, rushed to the site and made frantic efforts to remove the soil and rescue them. Unfortunately, their attempts were unsuccessful. After receiving the news, members of the Fire Service, Bangladesh Army, and local police rushed to the spot. With the help of local people, the rescue teams recovered the four bodies from beneath the rubble around 7am, confirmed acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Faisal Mahmud Fuad. Officer-in-charge of Golapganj Model Police Station, Moniruzzaman, stated that the bodies have been sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The police suspect that the continuous rainfall over an extended period had significantly weakened the structure of the hill, leading to its sudden collapse. The incident has sparked fear and anxiety among residents of the surrounding areas. According to the Meteorological Office, Sylhet recorded an extraordinary 404.8 millimeters of rainfall between 6am on 31 May and 6am today—the highest recorded rainfall in the region this year. Officials are now expressing concern about potential flooding, as the heavy rains continue and water flows down from the surrounding hills.
