At least 26 people were killed and 17 others injured when suspected militants opened fire on a group of tourists in India’s Jammu and Kashmir, according to police reports on Wednesday. This marks the deadliest attack of its kind in nearly two decades. The Associated Press quoted Indian police confirming the fatalities and injuries.

The shooting took place on Tuesday in a meadow in the picturesque Pahalgam area of the Himalayan region. Among the deceased were 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. Authorities have described it as the most severe civilian attack in India since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The incident has shattered the relative peace that had returned to Kashmir in recent years, during which tourism had seen notable growth as militant activity had declined.

In the wake of the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his official two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to New Delhi on Wednesday. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also ended her trip to the United States and Peru prematurely. Her ministry noted that her return was to show solidarity with the nation during this difficult time.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the incident on social media, stating, “This attack is far more severe than anything we’ve witnessed targeting civilians in recent years.”
