The protesters were demanding approval of the university’s proposed full budget, implementation of housing allowances, and the launch of its second campus. The clash broke out around 12:30 PM near the Kakrail Mosque area when law enforcement obstructed the procession. As students attempted to break through police barricades, tensions escalated, leading to a scuffle. In response, police began baton-charging and used tear gas, water cannons, and sound grenades, eventually forcing the protesters to retreat towards the Matsya Bhaban intersection. According to JnU student Abir Hossain, at least 25 individuals were injured during the police action. All of them were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where they received emergency treatment. Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the hospital’s police outpost, confirmed that several injured individuals were undergoing treatment in the emergency department. A participant in the protest stated, “Many of our fellow students and some teachers were injured by the police action. Several have been taken to the hospital.” The students and teachers were marching in support of three key demands: introducing housing allowances for 70% of students starting from the 2025–26 fiscal year, approving the university’s full proposed budget without cuts, and initiating the second campus project with priority in the next ECNEC meeting. The march began at 11:45 AM from the ‘Genocide in 1971’ sculpture on the university campus, with students gathering from 10 AM at the main gate. The demonstration was organized by “July Oikko,” a platform comprising various student political, social, and cultural organizations. Participants included members of the JnU Teachers’ Association, Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Chhatra Shibir, Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, Baisammobirodhi Chhatra Andolon, and other cultural groups. The students had submitted their demands to the University Grants Commission (UGC) on 13 May. However, after expressing dissatisfaction with the response, they declared the long march later that same day.
