A medical board of specialist doctors has said that removing the bullet lodged inside her brain through surgery could further increase the risk to her life. At a meeting held on Saturday morning (May 9), the medical board decided not to proceed with surgery for now. Doctors said the bullet is stuck deep in the brain, damaging vital areas and moving toward the back of the head. She is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital under constant observation. According to doctors, surgery carries a high risk of excessive bleeding and severe neurological complications. Therefore, she is currently receiving supportive care only. Chattogram Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Md. Taslim Uddin told TBS, “Reshmi’s condition is critical. As per the medical board’s decision, surgery is not being performed at this stage. She is under close monitoring and receiving treatment in the ICU.” Doctors further stated that the bullet entered through her left eye and got lodged deep inside her brain. Due to damage in vital neurological areas, any surgical intervention is extremely risky. On Saturday night, Reshmi’s brother Faisal Ahmed said over the phone that the medical board had met in the morning and doctors described her condition as severe. The bullet could not be removed from her head, and she has not regained consciousness. The family is now praying for her recovery. Her father, Riaz Ahmed, said that his daughter remains unconscious and demanded justice for the incident, stating that such events should not happen to anyone else. Family sources said Reshmi is a fourth-grade student at a local primary school and the youngest of five siblings. She was hit by a stray bullet while going to buy betel leaves for her mother. The incident occurred on Thursday night in the Raufabad area of Bayezid Bostami Police Station in Chattogram city, when a gunman opened fire, killing a 24-year-old man named Hasan Raju. During the attack, a stray bullet struck Reshmi as she was passing by. She was initially admitted to the Neurosurgery Ward of Chattogram Medical College Hospital and later moved to the ICU. Due to a lack of available ICU beds, she was briefly transferred to a private hospital before being brought back to the government hospital when a bed became available. On Friday night, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Jahidul Islam Miah visited the hospital to inquire about her treatment and said the incident reflects a deterioration in law and order. He added that law enforcement agencies and intelligence units are working to arrest those involved as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Reshmi’s mother, Sakhina Begum, filed a case on Friday morning against unidentified individuals. Bayezid Bostami Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim confirmed the case and said that an investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made yet.
