The report, titled Human Rights Violations and Abuses related to the Protests of July and August 2024 in Bangladesh, estimates that around 1,400 people were killed, with most deaths caused by military rifles and shotguns loaded with lethal metal pellets. According to the report, OHCHR has "reasonable grounds to believe" that the former government, along with its security and intelligence forces and violent groups linked to the Awami League, carried out severe human rights violations. These include hundreds of extrajudicial killings, excessive use of force that left thousands injured, mass arbitrary arrests and detentions, as well as torture and other mistreatment. The findings suggest that these violations were coordinated and executed with the knowledge and direction of political leaders and senior security officials. The report further reveals that thousands sustained severe, often life-changing injuries, while over 11,700 people were arrested and detained, based on police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) data. Fatality estimates indicate that 12-13% of those killed were children. Additionally, security forces reportedly targeted minors, subjecting them to killings, intentional maiming, arbitrary arrests, inhumane detention conditions, torture, and other forms of abuse.
