The vessel was heading toward the jetty of Payra Thermal Power Plant when the incident happened. Ship engineer Riazul Hossain said, “A school of small hilsa suddenly started jumping on both sides of the ship and some leaped onto the deck. About three maunds of fish landed on the vessel. The rest slipped back into the sea.” Professor Dr. Md. Rehaj Selim of Patuakhali Science and Technology University explained that when large groups of small fish or juvenile hilsa are chased by bigger fish, they often move toward bright ship lights at night. Water movement around the vessel can draw the fish closer, causing them to leap upward. He added that navigation lights, engine vibration, and propeller movement can attract or disorient small fish.
