Police in Bareilly district have detained 12 individuals for allegedly offering namaz in a vacant house without authorization, officials said on Sunday. A video of the prayers, reportedly recorded inside the house, has been circulating on social media.

SP (South) Anshika Verma said the action was taken as a precaution after locals in Mohammadganj village reported that the empty house had been used as a temporary madrasa for several weeks. “Conducting any new religious activity or gathering without permission violates the law. Strict action will follow if such activities are repeated,” she added, urging residents to maintain peace and order.

The 12 detainees were charged under sections related to breach of peace and later produced before a magistrate, who granted them bail. Police are still searching for three others who remain absconding.

Preliminary inquiries revealed the house belongs to a man named Hanif and was being temporarily used for Friday prayers. Authorities noted that no written permission or valid documents were presented when requested. Some villagers had raised objections to the unauthorized prayers, prompting police intervention. The circulating video has also been included in the ongoing investigation.
