Developed by UK-based Amber Therapeutics, the neurostimulator, called Picostim, was surgically implanted at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Oran suffers from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a treatment-resistant epilepsy causing numerous daily seizures since age three. Following the surgery in October, which involved placing electrodes deep into his brain connected to the neurostimulator, Oran's seizures have reduced by 80%. His mother, Justine, reports significant improvements in his quality of life, noting his increased happiness and communication. The trial, named Cadet Pilot, plans to recruit more patients with similar conditions to assess the device's efficacy further. Consultant neurosurgeon Martin Tisdall expressed optimism about the potential of deep brain stimulation to transform treatment for pediatric epilepsy, potentially becoming a standard therapeutic option in the future.
