Bangladeshi-origin Eliza Rahman has made history after being elected Deputy Mayor of Camden Council in southwest Sydney, becoming the first woman of Bangladeshi origin to hold the position in Australia, according to reports.
Rahman, who was elected as a Camden councillor representing the Labor Party in 2024, was chosen as deputy mayor by fellow councillors. Vince Ferreri was elected mayor.
She is also only the second person of Bangladeshi origin to serve as a deputy mayor in an Australian local government body, following Masud Khalil, who held the position at Campbelltown City Council in 2023.
