A South Korean woman fell victim to a romance scam after being persuaded by a deepfake video impersonating Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Initially skeptical, Ms. Jeong Ji-sun was convinced by the scammer's seemingly authentic communication, including personal details and images. The imposter even claimed to have met the South Korean president. Lured by promises of investment returns, Ms. Jeong transferred funds to a Korean bank account provided by the scammer. However, South Korean laws lack specific provisions to address such crimes. Statistics indicate a high proportion of female victims in similar scams. The incident underscores the growing sophistication of online fraud and the need for improved legal protections.
