Marie Fowler, at 83, became Howard University's oldest graduate, earning a doctorate in divinity. Initially uncertain about her ability to return to school after decades, she was inspired by her parents, who were born when it was illegal for them to learn to read and write. Fowler’s father’s belief that “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” motivated her. Over her three years at Howard's Divinity School, she became a beloved figure. Professor Alice Ogden Bellis described her as “the life of the party,” praising her determination and clear sense of purpose. Fowler’s journey underscores her message that it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
