Over the past year, the interim government has cleared Tk18,631 crore in outstanding foreign power bills, according to the Power Division. Of this, Tk5,000 crore was paid to Adani Power Limited, reducing its remaining dues to Tk2,363.50 crore, said Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan.

He added that various cost-cutting measures in the power sector have saved the government Tk6,479 crore. These include a 4% reduction in import service charges (saving Tk470 crore), increased shipment quantities from 15,000 to 20,000 tonnes (saving Tk354 crore), and tariff renegotiations projected to save Tk2,500 crore annually.

Additionally, ten old and inefficient IPP or rental power plants were shut down, saving Tk525 crore. Reforms in public power generation companies are expected to save another Tk2,630 crore. Meanwhile, an amendment to the Renewable Energy Policy, approved in May 2025, aims to add 3,000MW of rooftop solar power by December this year.
