Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter clarified that the Ministry of Commerce has taken the decision to export hilsa in view of India's special request on the occasion of Durga Puja. She said, "The decision to export hilsa belongs to the Ministry of Commerce. The Ministry has given this permission at the special request of India. Our commitment remains the same."
Responding to concerns over the possibility of hilsa prices rising, she said, "Exporting hilsa will not increase the price. There is plenty of hilsa in the country, and last time too India took less hilsa. If the news of export increases the price, we will take action."
Farida Akhtar emphasized that hilsa exports will not affect the country's domestic supply. She had earlier assured that hilsa would be exported only after meeting the country's demand. The Ministry of Commerce later issued an order authorizing the export of 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to India, removing earlier uncertainties about this export.
