60pc buildings of Dhaka to collapse if 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurs on Madhupur fault

A study by RAJUK's Urban Resilience Project warns that a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on Madhupur fault in Tangail could cause 40.28% to 64.83% of Dhaka's buildings to collapse, potentially impacting 8,64,619 to 13,91,685 structures. Abdul Latif Helali, Rajuk's chief engineer, disclosed this at a seminar on earthquake risk management. Additionally, a 7.1 magnitude quake on Sylhet Lineament could damage 1.91% to 14.66% of Dhaka's buildings, affecting 40,935 to 3,14,742 structures. If an earthquake strikes in the morning, it could claim 2,10,000 to 3,10,000 lives, while afternoon and night scenarios predict 2,70,000 to 4,00,000 and 3,20,000 to 5,00,000 fatalities, respectively.
