China conducted naval and aerial drills around Taiwan as a response to Taiwan's new president's pledge to defend democracy. The exercises, named "Joint Sword-2024A," aimed to deter separatist activities, which China views as a threat to its sovereignty. Taiwan deployed its forces in response, vowing to protect its freedom.

Taiwan's president condemned China's military actions as provocative, prompting warnings from China of severe consequences. China perceives Taiwan's new leadership as advocating independence, which it vehemently opposes. The drills focused on testing combat capabilities and potentially blockading Taiwan's critical port of Kaohsiung, disrupting its trade and energy supplies.

These maneuvers mark an escalation in tensions between China and Taiwan, with previous exercises occurring after interactions between Taiwan's officials and foreign leaders, notably from the US. The US, while officially recognizing China, maintains significant ties with Taiwan, including supplying military equipment.

US General Stephen Sklenka expressed concern over the exercises but noted they were not unexpected. Overall, the situation underscores the delicate balance in the Taiwan Strait, a crucial trade route, and the US's ambiguous stance on intervention.
