Independent MP Rumin Farhana has said that political leaders usually do not respond to rape and abuse cases unless they become viral or widely discussed on social media. She noted that when an incident gains public attention on platforms like Facebook, only then does it receive political reaction and progress toward justice, creating a “cherry-picking” culture where most cases are ignored.

She made these remarks at a discussion titled “No More Rape, Child Abuse, Impunity: Which Way to Solve?” organized in Dhaka by the civic platform “No More+” at Bishwa Sahitya Kendra. She also said that politicizing such crimes prevents real justice and weakens the rule of law.

Other speakers, including lawyers, doctors, activists, and political figures, stressed the need for stronger systems so that cases receive attention even without going viral. They called for coordinated efforts from the state, media, and society, better monitoring of trials, and stronger social movements. They agreed that rape and abuse should not be used for political gain and that sustained public awareness and institutional reform are necessary to ensure justice and prevent further incidents.
