Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as Bangladesh's 23rd president on Friday evening, taking the oath of office in a ceremony held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, the presidential residence.

Acting Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal administered the oath. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, cabinet ministers, senior government officials and political leaders from across the spectrum.

The swearing in followed Thursday's vote, in which members of parliament elected Alamgir to the presidency, marking the first genuinely contested presidential race in Bangladesh in nearly 35 years.
