The government has been urged to halt the export of hilsa to India immediately. This notice was directed to the Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the Chairman of the National Board of Revenue, and the Chief Controller of the Office of Import and Export. Supreme Court lawyer Md. Mahmudul Hasan sent the notice on Sunday, September 22. The notice highlighted that India, with its extensive maritime boundary, already produces an abundance of hilsa. Therefore, there is no necessity for India to import hilsa from Bangladesh. Despite this, India primarily imports hilsa from the Padma River in Bangladesh. Indian agents and fish exporters in Bangladesh collect and store Padma hilsa year-round, and, with government approval, export the majority to India. In some cases, the fish is also illegally smuggled across the border. As a result, Padma hilsa is becoming increasingly scarce in local markets, forcing the people of Bangladesh to consume sea hilsa, which is considered less flavorful than Padma hilsa.
